CHANGE IN MEETINGS!!!!

Next meeting THIS Saturday Night (12th) @ Monte Carlo 7PM
(Monte Carlo Restaurant Old Forest Rd next to Harbor Inn)
(Pizza, Salad Buffet, Fountain Drinks for approx $8-$9 or order off menu)

We are now half way thru 2008 and we have tried the every other month on week night strategy and there has been some success. However, while this has allowed some members to attend that cannot make weekend meetings, the attendance is a little low, and some of you have voiced your opinion that every other month is not enough especially during the summer months. So, we will still do the Tuesday Night meetings at the HOG Club House AND we will start having casual meetings the other months on a weekend night at a restaurant. The restaurant meetings will be informal without any speakers but will still have lots of info sharing. After all, that is what we do, we share information for you to enjoy your Corvette more and live the Corvette lifestyle. For those who have ordered name tags please pick them up!

And if you have not received your VCC 25th Anniversary patch you can pick that up at the meeting also.

CLUB PHOTOGRAPH !!!!!!!!
We will take the club photo at the D-DAY MEMORIAL Saturday August 2nd or Saturday August 9th (Rain Date) . The photo will have to take place before 9AM before the regular opening hours. Please try to be there at 8AM. This photo will be sent to most of the Corvette Magazines. Hope to see our Veterans!!!!

STAR CITY MOTOR MADNESS
HOT HOT HOT but well worth the trip! There were approx 100 Corvettes including the new ZR-1! What an AWESOME Corvette. There are some pictures on the web site. Congrats to the Star City Club for a job well done!!!

Bob had mentioned some members were not picked up with the Lynchburg group in Bedford. I apologize for that as we came thru a few minutes earlier than planned.

Be sure to check out photo's from the event... CLICK HERE!!!!

BY LAWS
Please take a look at the enclosed copy (coming via snail mail) and bring your thoughts and comments to the meeting. We need to hear your input. Mostly it is to protect you and the club especially if we have an event like a car show. Many thanks to Nadine for the many hours put into this.

VETTE FEST SATURDAY JULY 26
This event will be here before you know it. We will discuss this at the meeting and have another notice go out before the event but now we are planning on meeting at Templeton’s Market on RT 460 past Falwell’s Airport and Jumbo’s. We can gas up, get food, beverages, and ice. Richard Hawkins is planning on bringing his enclosed trailer with a generator that will power our fans under our 10x20 canopy.
As mentioned before, this is an EASY 2 hour drive to Virginia Motorsports Park. You will be able to take your Corvette out on the same track where John Force will race in October.

CRUISE NIGHTS
Maybe one of these Saturdays it will not rain and we can park the Corvettes together. You can still attend the Bedford Cruise this Saturday night and leave around 6:30 to make the meeting. Let’s try again to park together at the Lynchburg Cruise Night at River Ridge Mall on the 19th. (between 5 and 5:30)

NCM RAFFLE TICKETS
I only have a hand full of raffle tickets from the National Corvette Museum for a new RED 2009 COUPE. They are only $10 each and are tax deductible. I will have them at the meeting. The expansion at the museum has started and they need all the help we can give them.

June 2008 News

Note from the WebMaster... sorry for the late update folks! ;)

Next Meeting:
The next gathering of Fiberglass Friends will be Tuesday Night June 17th at the H.O.G. club house located right next to the Harley Dealership on Timberlake Rd. We will start around 7PM. Our events calendar if filling up and the Saturday after the meeting is Lynchburg Cruise Night.

Parkway Ride:
Ole Mother Nature gave us a real break and the rain held off. Turn out was low because of the impending weather but we still had 11 Corvettes. It was a great little ride from the Peaks to Rt 60. It was fun flying down the mountain to Amherst. It was nice to meet some of our newest members: Larry and Vivian Minnis, and Brian and Nikki Dykes. Of course it is always a pleasure to have the Langhorne’s around.

A lady from out of state had a bicycle wreck on the parkway and was brought to the James River visitor’s center right before we arrived. Nikki step right in with her EMT skills and did a great job! Thank you Nikki!

UNCLE BILLY’S DAY!!!
SATURDAY JUNE 7TH!! Please let Chip Thomas know ASAP if you plan on attending the car show so he can give the promoters a head count. Things are a little different this year because of some cut backs. Unfortunately there will not be any Dash Plaques this year. The entry fee is $5 per car and $5 per person. The money still goes to a great cause which is the Altavista Fire Department. Another great thing in entering the car show is that you get the best parking available for Uncle Billy’s Day. We will meet at the Altavista Walmart at 10AM and Chip will lead us in from there. The easiest way to get to the Walmart is take the second exit off Rt 29 South then take a right.
Chip: (434) 944-8623  e-mail: chipthomas1957@msn.com

Happy Belated May Birthday

Happy June Birthday
8th: Nadine Burkholder, 9th: Elaine Burton, 9th: George Laubenstein, 19th: Brent Tyree
23rd: Larry Minnis, 25th: Ruby Davis

Benefit Car Show June 8th
Enclosed please see the flyer for the Car show at Chatham Middle School to benefit the Danville Cancer Society. It is organized by the Virginia-Carolina Classic Chevy Club. I put the 63 in this show last year and it was a good show for a good cause.

Thomas Road Baptist Church and Liberty University Cruise Ins
Don’t know anything about it but I included the flyers they have been handing out at all the other Cruise-Ins. Let us know what you know!

Vette Fest
This will be much bigger and I’m sure better than last years event. Once again see the enclosed info card. There will be Drag Racing, Corvette Show, Dyno Pulls, and more. John and Jo Ann are thinking of taking one of their parts trailers down and being part of the vendor midway. Richard Hawkins may take his enclosed trailer with a generator so we can have fans blowing while sitting under YOUR 10ft x 20ft canopy. This will be in late July and that gives us plenty time to plan this one right.

JnJ Vette Parts
Speaking of John and Jo Ann, they have been a great help finding odd ball parts for the 76 and the 63. Check out the web site with all those parts! Keep their card handy!

Club By Laws
Coming very soon!

Star City Motor Madness
The pre registration is extremely low and we need to step up!!!! Come on guys and gals, even the Mopar enthusiasts had more. The Corvette is THE showcase vehicle for this.
GM IS SHOWING UP WITH A NEW ZR-1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are 2 Corvette clubs from Indiana coming!

SEE YOU AT THE JUNE MEETING, CRUISE NIGHTS AND EVENTS!

No May news to post...

Next Meeting:
The next gathering of Fiberglass Friends will be Tuesday Night April 15th at the H.O.G. club house located right next to the Harley Dealership on Timberlake Rd. We will start around 7PM. Our events calendar if filling up (I HOPE YOU ARE CHECKING IT ON THE WEB SITE!) and the Saturday after the meeting is Lynchburg Cruise Night and the LaGrange Wine Tasting with a Corvette Show in Haymarket Virginia. Vera Swain has not had much interest in the LaGrange event so please let her know if you are interested.

We are famous again! (almost)
Vette Vues Magazine has given us a huge amount of coverage that covers the cookout we had with Star City last fall. They gave us 15 pages, 22 black and white photos, 20 color photos, and the complete article I sent in! Let me or Bob Hage know if you want a copy as we will order some extras. They run around $4 ea.

Corvette Drag Racing Update
Due to my daughter graduating college on May 10th I cannot be the contact person for the National Corvette Challenge. I’m sure someone will step up to take my place. There will be a test and tune session soon at Natural Bridge Dragway with Vince being the pilot of Tom Lucado’s C6 Rocket. Johnny may even break out his 53 Corvette Gasser replica for this test and tune. Please stay tuned, check your e-mails and web site, and join the fun.
I should receive the brochures soon on the Corvette Club of Richmond Vette Fest.

Corvette Factory Racing
Not enough room here to detail all of the updates so I will hit the high spots here.
The only car that challenged the C6R’s at Sebring was one Aston Martin and it finished many laps behind.  The cellulosic E85 fuel seemed to pose no problems with heat or mileage. It looks like the FIA will support ALMS to consolidate the GT classes into one in 2010.  I urge everyone of you to go to the Corvette Racing web site (linked to our web site and the museum web site) and read the comments from Doug Fehan (Corvette Racing Program Manager) that is from a transcript of a teleconference that was held March 26th. It is VERY interesting!

MDA Car Show
Many thanks to everyone who was involved with this undertaking, especially Bob Hage your events director and Vince Owen our club display Corvette. We picked up new members and everyone stopped to drool over Vince’s 65 and Peter Kelly’s Z06 from Star City.

An Old Fashion Parkway Ride?
Yep! Since I have to bow out of the National Corvette Challenge, I will head up a good ole Sunday afternoon Blue Ridge Parkway Ride (weather permitting of course). Let’s go Sunday April 27th. We will met at the Peaks of Otter Rest Stop between 1 and 1:30. We will head north and get off the Parkway at Rt 60. If you want the short ride you can get off at the James River. This is only a 45 mile ride and it should be relaxing!

Club By Laws
Nadine has been working hard on this and it is almost in final draft.

Star City Motor Madness
If you want to park in the Corvette section you MUST Pre-register. This will be huge. Bob Hage will have more at the meeting.

Cleveland Auto Show

Message From Matthew Downey, VCC Webmaster

I had an opportunity to visit the new ZR-1 at the Cleveland Auto Show last weekend. Below are pictures of the ZR-1 that crossed the stage at the Barrett-Jackson Auction and represented the first ZR-1 sold. I gotta say... this car looks even more impressive in person. They also had a rolling chassis for the car showing the aluminum frame, new supercharged motor, and some other subtle (and not so subtle) goodies. Here's some pictures from the show...

As a side note, when my buddy and I walked through the Dodge display... there wasn't one single person looking at the Viper. I chuckled to myself over that one.

February 2008 Newsletter

In case you missed this week's meeting, here's the new banner celebrating our 25th!!!

DUES / MEMBERSHIP FORM

The dues this year will once again be $20 per household. We were able to hold this because of some extra money we made with auctions and great donations like the $500 from John & Jo Ann from J&J Vette Parts that was applied to our Christmas dinner.

PLEASE fill out our revised membership form even if your information has not changed or if you have paid your 2008 dues. We have revised the information required from you and we want to make sure we can contact you in short notice when we have little time to prepare for events of if they get cancelled at the last minute.

Send this form back (w/dues if not paid) in the enclosed self addressed stamped envelope.
It does get any easier than that! If we have not heard from you by February 29th you will be dropped from our membership listing. Again, if you have any questions, call or e-mail Nadine or myself. Make the check out to the Virginia Corvette Club.

NEW MEETING PLACE, DAY, AND TIME!!!!!!!
7PM TUESDAY NIGHT FEBRUARY 19TH
AT THE H.O.G. CLUB HOUSE (HARLEY DEALERSHIP) TIMBERLAKE RD

We are going to try a different approach to start off 2008. You know we have had most meetings on Sundays at local restaurants. It’s tuff holding our meeting (and your attention) to approx 1 hour when there is food and drink being served. Nothing is more permanent than change and we will see how this goes as we previously had meetings on Tuesday Nights several years ago with great success. We are also exploring the idea of having structured meetings EVERY OTHER MONTH! Information sharing and notification is what keeps civic groups and clubs moving forward and with 99.9% of the members having e-mail and internet access, the Board feels we can actually improve the club with this. Matt has done such a great job keeping up the web site with current events from Bob (Events Director) and other sources, this direction just makes sense. It also makes sense to send out mass e-mails to the members with information instead of waiting for a meeting or newsletter. We also support meetings at members homes in the warm months as we all want to be outside. Nadine has committed to have a cookout / meeting at her house in Concord and I will do the same. Can’t wait for warmer weather!

VCC and 25th ANNIVERSARY ITEMS

All paid households will get a special Virginia Corvette Club 25th Anniversary patch for their club jackets. More can be purchased (1st come / 1st served) at a minimal charge that is yet to be determined. The 25th patch art work is very close to what you see at the top of the cover page. Stickers of the same may also be available. Both are around 3” in diameter. A special 25th Anniversary 3ft x 5ft banner is also being produced by member Doug McBride of Central Virginia Signs and will be on display at the MDA Car show and through out the year. We will have all 2008 members sign the banner close to the end of the year, then we will auction it off at the last gathering of 2008.
If you need to purchase name tags please contact Nadine.
There are very few VCC T-Shirts left and they will be at the Feb 19th meeting for sale.

YOUR VIRGINIA CORVETTE LICENSE PLATE

Ok folks, It’s time to get this done! You should have received an e-mail from Dennis Gripp back on the 13th explaining how easy and inexpensive this is. If we have “Friends of Tibet” and “Butterfly Lovers” license plates, it will be a “SHAME ON YOU!” we don’t get a Corvette plate! This plate does not have to go on a Corvette. I run antique tags on both of my Corvettes so I will apply for one for my El Camino. Even if you own a Ford (don’t know why you would) apply for this plate. The deadline for this will be here soon! AN APPLICATION IS ENCLOSED!

>>>A WORD FROM DENNIS GRIPP<<<
Dennis said to bring your application to the next meeting or mail it to his home address at 132 Jane Terrace, Madison Heights VA 24572. If you have any questions you can call him at (434) 929-0513

RACE CARS, PACE CARS, FAST CARS
The C6R Factory Backed Corvettes will run on E85 fuel in the ALMS Series. Their first race is the 12 hours of Sebring on March 15th. Link on our web site.

The Corvette will once again pace the Indy 500 this year. The actual Pace Corvette will also fun on E85 and it is painted the color changing Gold Rush Green and Gold.
Their will also be some Black and Silver Pace Corvette available to be public celebrating the 30 Anniversary of the 1978 Pace Car. They are beautiful! www.indypacecars.com

The ZR-1 is really getting a lot of attention. The first one was auctioned off at Barrett-Jackson. It was driven on stage by our Friend Jay Leno who really voiced his opinion on how great the Z06’s and this ZR-1 are. It will be the only one painted Le Mans Blue.
It brought a cool 1 Million Dollars and all the proceeds went to the United Way.

Speaking of Jay Leno, He has one of those Pratt & Miller C6RS Street Racers. This Corvette costs approx $180,000 WITHOUT the donor ZO6 that has to be provided. With the projected cost of the new ZR-1 around $100,000 it will be interesting to see how the two land rockets will be compared.
If you want to see some incredibly fast C5 and C6 Corvettes (and others), The Richmond Dragway will be the place to be May 10th. It will be the 2008 version of The National Corvette Challenge. Last year we had a large group travel down with Kent Cartner and Tom Lucado racing. Tom has upgraded some rear end parts and we all look forward to see him rip up the pavement. A little NO2 and 4:10 gears may help a little to!

NATIONAL CORVETTE DAY
Mike Yager is at it again. Some of you know he was one of the originators of “Drive Your Corvette To Work Day” which was always the last Friday in June. Now he is pushing for June 30th to be “National Corvette Day.” The first Corvette came out of a Flint Michigan plant on June 30th 1953. As Mike says: “The Corvette is more than a material possession, it is a symbol of American pride. Amen to that. For more information on this effort or for a Mid America catalog call 1-800-500-1500. It will be up to YOU to contact your congressional representative to voice your support!

SPEAKING OF MID AMERICA
Enclosed you will find a flyer on some leather Corvette travel bags and a killer price as long as we get an order for 10 or more. I’m a sucker for stuff like this so if you want one of these bags, call or e-mail me. Robert (434) 534-6245 or vacorvette@msn.com

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR EVENTS DIRECTOR BOB HAGE
One of the things we want to accomplish in our Feb meeting is to firm up our events for 2008. We want to spend some good quality time discussing what we want to do as a club.  Bob has ideas to get the juices flowing. Come with your thoughts and ideas as to what you want to do this year, and we will “build” our schedule. Hopefully, by the end of the meeting we will have 4 or 5 great events that the club can get behind and support.

Plans are proceeding for the MDA Car Show March 7, 8, and 9. A new banner touting our 25th anniversary is in the works and a brochure to hand out to potential new members is being designed. The show is going to be bigger and better than ever this year. The new addition to the Civic Center is complete this year and being opened up to house the “Car Club Alley” event, as well as more beautiful cars. The swap meet Saturday and Sunday is supposed to be bigger and better than ever.

UPDATE FROM ROBERT: We have worked it out for The VCC and the Star City Corvette Club to be next to each other! Star City’s new President Roger Abshire came up with the excellent idea for the Star City club to have a newer performance enhanced Corvette and we will have an older one for a club display Corvette. Next year we will switch! They will have that winged C6 Z06 you saw at the Parkway Cookout and  we will have Vince Owen’s killer Mid Year Pro Street Corvette. THANKS VINCE!!!
We need volunteers to man the club table to answer questions and hand out info!

HISTORY OF THE WORLD PART 1 (not a Mel Brooks movie)

Long before The Virginia Corvette Club was even a thought, there was the Rallye Corvettes LTD club. I do not remember the years of existence but it was a big deal. They were part of the Southern Confederacy of Corvette Clubs. I still have my ticket stub from a Corvette Show I attended held by them at the old Fort Drive In back in 1976! Make it a point to sit down this year with Tony Moshonas, Jack Butler, Skinny, and anyone else that can recall those fun times. They had one event at the base of Afton Mountain called the Bo Hog Festival that is legendary. One of those “find yourself in the grass the next morning” events is what I have heard. They also did their share of Drag Racing which is what I think we should do more of.

For a short time there was also the Hill City Corvette Club with a few members that were mostly made up of B&W employees. I had heard a lot of their activities were going on shopping trips. I knew some of those members and they were a great bunch. The President moved out of town because of work and the club ceased to exist shortly after.

In early 1983 I bought my first Corvette (1975 Mille Miglia Red Coupe) from a guy I worked with. My best friend who had Corvettes was still alive at that time and pretty much most people in the area that had Corvettes kind of knew each other. The Corvette Fever was and maximum temperature anticipating the C4 and the timing for another Corvette Club was perfect. We picked a day in October that year and I started making phone calls. My first call was to Melvin Scott. Melvin and his late brother Ashby had more Corvettes that seemed humanly possible. On that perfect weather day in October we had 22 Corvettes meet at the River Ridge Mall and we headed for the Parkway. When I have a meeting / cook out at my house this year I will break out the photo album of that day and you will see R.A & Frankie, Tony, Skinny, Linda, and yours truly.

Next time I will have a short story on how we came up with the Virginia Corvette Club name.

Holiday Lights at the Beach - Details
Mark your calendars for December 8 and plan to join us again this year for our annual trek to Virginia Beach for the Boardwalk Lights Tour.  We’re extending an invitation to the Beachcombers, Blue Ridge and Aquia Creek Corvette Clubs to join us, so we ought to have a great turnout this year

Danny Terry and Norma Bonner started this annual CCR event several years ago, and it’s a weekend we really look forward to.  Besides helping bring in the Christmas season, it’s the last CCR caravan you can be part of until the weather warms up!  Holiday Lights at the Beach stretches from 2nd Street to 33rd Street along the boardwalk with over 250 animated nautical and holiday-themed light displays!  It is the largest grand illumination display to grace the Atlantic seaboard AND each year the order of light displays is changed to help create a new and fresh experience for visitors.  The cost is $10 per car which also includes a CD of holiday music

When we get to the beach, first we’ll check in to the hotel and then head out for a nice meal at The Raven at 4:30.  After that, feel free to take the light tour or head back to the hotel to prepare for our evening party.  Again this year, the hotel is giving us their party room free of charge.  Please pack a cooler with your beverage of choice for the party room and bring along some munchies to share.  If you’ve got a Santa Hat, BRING IT along with your Club Radios.  At the party, we’ll have a DJ playing tunes and we can dance or just sit back and mingle, or play some Texas Hold’em.  Before the night’s out, CCR’s Polar Bear Club (headed by Norma) will take a dip in the ocean.  (Feel free to join them if you dare

Please make your own hotel reservations (Howard Johnson at 1801 Atlantic Avenue, 1-757-437-9100).  Our rate is the same as last year - $50 per night, and let the hotel know you’re with CCR.  The hotel has good, covered parking and if you’ve put your Vette away for the winter, come in your OTC (other than Corvette

Also, please sign the events book at the meeting or call Danny (458-2190) to let him know you’re coming.  He’ll want a headcount for the caravan down and for the dinner at The Raven

We will meet at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 8 at the Dairy Queen at Route 5 and 295.  We will depart promptly at noon.  O.D.s Danny Terry and Norma Bonner will lead the caravan down by way of scenic back roads.
